Liverpool put in a “performance for the ages” to come from behind to beat Newcastle United at St James Park, Trent Alexander-Arnold said after the game.
The visitors played with ten-men for the majority of the contest after Virgil van Dijk was sent off for denying Alexander Isak a goalscoring opportunity in the 28th minute. Anthony Gordon had given the Magpies the lead just moments earlier.
But Newcastle failed to hold onto the win, conceding two late goals from substitute Darwin Nunez as the Reds maintained their unbeaten start to the Premier League season.
“It was unbelievable to be honest,” Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports. “It was something very special out there today. You come here with a game plan, you want to control the game, dictate possession and try to kill the atmosphere as quickly as possible. That is normally a huge advantage for them.
“That went out the window very quickly. We had to do it the hard way, the very hard way. But we all pulled together, dug deep and delivered something for the ages.
“One of our best performances since the manager has come in, and we’ve had some outstanding performances as a team. We’ll look back on this game as something very, very special.
Goalkeeper Alisson expressed a similar sentiment about Liverpool‘s performance, calling it a “one of a kind” win.
“You can’t underestimate Liverpool even in a game like that,” the Brazilian said. “When you play as a unit you can do so many things, make the pitch smaller and play with our quality. We said at half-time we would have chances and capable of doing something. We did it. This was one a kind.”
