Wayne Rooney is being linked with a return to English football with Birmingham City considering the former England captain as their next manager.
Birmingham have made a strong start to the Championship campaign and are unbeaten in five games so far this season, but contingency plans are being made in the event current manager John Eustace leaves the club.
Eustace was linked with vacancies at Rangers and Swansea during the summer and the Telegraph are reporting that Birmingham’s new American owners – who have enlisted NFL legend Tom Brady as an investor – want a ‘big name’ appointment as the club’s next head coach.
Rooney is currently in charge of MLS side DC United, though his current contract is set to expire in December and the 37-year-old could consider a return to English football.
The former Manchester United and Everton forward impressed in a previous role at Derby County despite the club’s financial difficulties during his time in charge at Pride Park.
Rooney recently expressed his disappointment that there had been no talks over a potential contract extension at DC United, despite his deal approaching its final months.
