Joe Cole says current side ‘best England team I’ve seen in my lifetime’

Joe Cole has called the current England side the best he has seen in his lifetime after the Three Lions beat Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park.

Gareth Southgate’s side produced an impressive performance to secure a comfortable friendly win, with Jude Bellingham starring with a goal and assist.

Phil Foden opened the scoring for England, in a fixture which commemorated the 150th anniversary of the first meeting between the British rivals.

Bellingham scored a second before half-time to double England’s lead and the Real Madrid midfielder later set up Harry Kane to score the visitor’s third, after a Harry Maguire own goal had briefly brought Scotland back into the game.

Cole was hugely impressed with England’s performance and the former England midfielder believes Southgate’s side are ready for tournament success at Euro 2024 next summer.

“They’ve been through the stages, semi-final, quarter-finals, final, lost on penalties,” Cole told Channel 4.

“These lads will go to the tournament with 40, 50 caps. We do have to (win a trophy), and that’s not me trying to put pressure on the lads. I look through the England team and it ticks every box.

“It’s the best England team I’ve seen in my lifetime.”
