Bruno Fernandes said the result was the ‘most important thing’ for Manchester United after the midfielder’s stunning goal earned a 1-0 win at Burnley.
Erik ten Hag’s side ended a run of three consecutive defeats in all competitions with a narrow win at Turf Moor, with Fernandes’ outstanding goal the difference between the teams after an uninspiring performance from the Red Devils.
United had earlier seen a Jonny Evans goal disallowed by VAR, before Fernandes volleyed home the winner from an acute angle on the stroke of half-time.
Burnley dominated the possession – their 558 completed passes the club’s highest ever in a Premier League match – but were unable to find an equaliser as the Clarets fell to a fourth consecutive home loss.
Fernandes admitted Manchester United were below their best in terms of performance, but was delighted that his side were able to end their losing run.
“It was a great pass from Jonny [Evans]. I know he has great qualities playing the ball in behind with both feet. I was waiting for it [the pass]. Burnley give space behind but it was tough to get that at times and we took the chance when it was there,” Fernandes told TNT Sports.
“We know that we have been in a tough bit of momentum but we knew we could come back from it. Obviously today the performance was not the best but we got the three points which is the most important thing.
“We knew the game today would be tough. Burnley play very well and to be honest I do not think that the points they have reflects how good they are. We are happy to take the win home today.”
