Jurgen Klopp has hit out at the ‘crazy decisions’ of the officials after Liverpool lost an incident-packed clash at Tottenham.
Joel Matip’s 96th-minute own goal condemned Liverpool to a late 2-1 loss in north London, after the Reds had appeared set to hold out for a point despite being reduced to nine men.
Curtis Jones was contentiously sent off after just 26 minutes for a high challenge on Yves Bissouma, but Liverpool still looked threatening with 10 men and saw Cody Gakpo equalise in first-half stoppage time after Son Heung-min’s opener for Spurs.
Substitute Diogo Jota was then sent off for Liverpool after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession, before the late heartbreak for Klopp’s side as Matip put through his own net with just seconds remaining.
Liverpool also saw a Luis Diaz goal controversially disallowed for offside, a decision which the PGMOL have since confirmed was incorrect.
Klopp took pride in his team’s performance but said Liverpool were on the wrong end of some ‘crazy decisions’.
“I was never more proud of the team than today. I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions,” Klopp told Sky Sports.
“We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud. The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle.
“It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.
“[For Diogo Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with eight outfield players is tricky.
“You want to build something you need players with mentality and I saw them today, they fought. Pretty special tonight.”
On Diaz’s disallowed goal, Klopp said: “The offside goal. That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong.
“The ball is between Mo’s legs, they drew the line wrong and didn’t judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right.
“It is so tough to deal with it.”
