Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk took responsibility for Brighton’s opening goal at the Amex Community Stadium on Sunday.
Simon Adingra dispossessed Alexis Mac Allister after the Reds midfielder received the ball from the Dutchman before striking the ball past Alisson Becker in the 20th minute.
Mo Salah scored a brace just before halftime to put the visitors ahead, but Lewis Dunk headed home late on to earn a draw for the Seagulls.
Van Dijk, though, felt that Liverpool could have taken all three points on the road. “We came here to win. I think we had opportunities to do so and in the end a draw, after a difficult game,” he told Sky Sports.
“Quite open at times. Quite even but looking at our team, we had opportunities to win.”
On Brighton‘s first goal, Van Dijk admitted: “Obviously, it is not only him [Mac Allister]. It is me as well. It is a risky ball and we try to play out from the back. These things happen and you get punished. The way we bounced back as a great reaction.”
For the second Albion goal, Van Dijk revealed that a “miscommunication” in defence allowed Dunk to get a free header on goal from a free kick after Andy Robertson pulled out of blocking the cross.
“He heard a shout and it wasn’t,” he said. “It was a miscommunication and we don’t want to make mistakes.
“Overall I am proud of my team and we have to get through the international break and then back for a very interesting couple of games.”
