The Euro 2024 picture became a little clearer this week as three teams booked their place at next summer’s tournament in Germany.
As the host nation, the Germans automatically qualified for the European Championship, while the remaining 23 remaining spots are decided by a qualifying tournament and playoffs.
The teams that finish first and second in the ten qualifying groups will fill 20 spots. The final three places will be determined by playoffs in March 2024.
Twelve nations will compete in the playoffs, but who makes up these teams will not be determined by their final position in the qualifying groups. Instead it is based on their performance in the Uefa Nations League in 2022/23.
Every team to have qualified for Euro 2024 so far
Two-time winners France sealed qualification Euro 2024 with a 2-1 win over Netherlands on Friday. They top Group B with a 100 percent record having won all six of their qualifiers with two games remaining.
Belgium held on for a 3-2 win over Austria to ensure they will finish in the top two of Group F and appear at their seventh major European finals next year.
Roberto Martinez’ Portugal side beat Slovakia by the same scoreline to book their place at the tournament, having won all seven qualifiers to date. They need just one more point to seal top spot in Group J.
Germany automatically qualified as tournament hosts.
What England, Scotland and Wales need to do to qualify
England: The Three Lions need just one more win to qualify for Euro 2024. Victory over Italy on Tuesday would virtually seal top spot. For England not to qualify, Italy would need to beat England and win another two of their final four games, and Ukraine would need to win their final three qualifiers.
Scotland: If Norway fail to beat Spain on Sunday, the Scots will qualify for the Euros. Victory over Georgia on November 16 would see Scotland also seal qualification.
Wales: Automatic qualification is a long shot, as the Dragons sit fourth in Group on five points. They need to beat Croatia on Sunday and better their results over the final two group games to finish in the top two. If they don’t, Wales are almost certain to qualify for the playoff tournament.
