Mourinho linked with shock Real Madrid return

Jose Mourinho is being linked with a shock return to Real Madrid, with Carlo Ancelotti set to leave the Spanish side at the end of the season.

Ancelotti is expected to leave Real Madrid at the end of the current campaign to take charge of the Brazil national team and a number of candidates have been linked with replacing the Italian at the Bernabeu.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, former head coach Zinedine Zidane, and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi are among the names reported to be under consideration, but Mundo Deportivo are reporting that Mourinho could make a surprise return to the club.

The 60-year-old’s contract at AS Roma expires at the end of the season and there have been no negotiations over a potential extension.

Mourinho led the side to Europa Conference League success in 2021/22, but Roma are tenth in Serie A this season after a difficult start and six points adrift of the Champions League places.

Mourinho spent three seasons at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013 and led the club to La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup success during his time with Los Blancos.

Mourinho has also been named as a potential England manager, should Gareth Southgate depart after next summer’s European Championship.
