Blow for ‘Big Six’ as Mitoma signs new Brighton contract

Brighton have been handed a boost in their bid to keep Kaoru Mitoma at the club after the winger committed to a new long-term contract.

Mitoma has signed a new contract that will run until June 2027, having starred during a breakthrough campaign with the Seagulls last season.

The Japan international scored seven goals and provided five assists in the Premier League last season, while he has began the new campaign in superb form with six goal involvements in seven starts.

His impact is understood to have alerted several of the Premier League’s top clubs with a number of the ‘Big Six’ reportedly considering a move for Mitoma, but the winger has instead committed his future to the south coast side.

Discussing Mitoma’s new deal, technical director David Weir said Brighton were delighted to secure the future of one of the club’s ‘most important players’.

“Ensuring that a player of Kaoru’s quality will remain with us for the long term is fantastic new,” Weir told the club’s official website.

“Kaoru adapted to the Premier League last season and has quickly become one of our most important players.

“His success is also a reflection of the work of the departments that have played a role in his recruitment, helped him gain important experience on loan and ultimately become a big part of Roberto’s first team group.

“I have no doubt that our supporters will be delighted with the news.”
