Erik ten Hag has said that Andre Onana ‘knows he’s not been good enough’ since signing for Manchester United, but has backed the goalkeeper to find form.
Onana has struggled since signing for Manchester United from Inter Milan for a fee of £47.2m during the summer, with the Cameroon international having made a series of mistakes for the club.
The 27-year-old was at fault as the Red Devils lost to Galatasaray in the Champions League before the international break, a defeat which leaves Ten Hag’s team bottom of Group A and without a point.
United return to Premier League action against Sheffield United this weekend and Ten Hag has backed Onana – who he previously worked with at Ajax – to overcome a difficult start and show his quality.
“He knows [he’s not been good enough], we know, he will do much better,” Ten Hag told his pre-match press conference.
“As with every player who’s coming into the Premier League, you need an integration period but he has to step up. Big United keepers like Peter Schmeichel and David De Gea started [slowly] and Andre knows that it is good to know a little bit from history.
“We live now, we live in the future and he has to make his future by giving better performances. I’m sure he will do. He showed it at Barcelona, Ajax, Inter Milan, he was in the semi-final and the final of the Champions League, I’m sure he will give a great performance.”
