Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United had a ‘narrow escape’ after Andre Onana saved a last-gasp penalty in the club’s 1-0 win over FC Copenhagen.
The Red Devils earned their first points of the Champions League campaign after a hard-fought win over the Danish side, with Harry Maguire heading home the winner after 72 minutes.
United had lost each of their opening two fixtures in the group and came close to extending their winless run to three games, with Onana saving a stoppage time spot-kick to preserve the points.
The win moves Ten Hag’s team up to third and within a point of Galatasaray in second, after the Turkish side lost at home to Bayern Munich. Ten Hag discussed a dramatic end to the contest with Copenhagen and admits his side were fortune to ‘escape’ with all three points.
“Of course it is incredible and a great night. Especially in the dying second when you concede a penalty, but a brilliant save from Andre Onana,” Ten Hag told TNT Sports.
“Those players, Harry Maguire played a good game and Andre Onana as well. He had an important save just after half-time. We should have got a penalty on Marcus Rashford and I do not know why it was not a penalty.
“It was onside, but he did not give a penalty. Finally we dealt with it and it is a step up. Few weeks ago we got out of rhythm from referees decisions.
“A poor first-half, but we stayed calm and in the second-half we stepped up and made more chances than them. It was a narrow escape in the end.”
