Fulham lost ’emotional control’ as Man United snatch late victory

Fulham manager Marco Silva believes Manchester United took advantage of his side’s lack of “emotional control” to steal all three points late on.

The hosts failed to clear their lines multiples times before Bruno Fernandes struck home from the edge of the box in injury time at Craven Cottage on Saturday.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Silva said that there was “frustration in our dressing room” following the result.

“Very good second half from ourselves,” the Portuguese said. “First half was more balanced. Second half we had very good spells and had 20-25 minutes where we controlled the game.

“It is not unlucky it is keeping emotional control on the pitch. Three or four players making mistakes is difficult to understand for us. We have to grow as a team.

“It is clear emotional control we lost in that moment.”

Fulham suffered an injury blow in the second half when Rodrigo Muniz came off the pitch in tears. “Let’s hope it is nothing serious,” Silva said.

“I don’t have all the details right now and we will assess him but he is feeling a lot of pain. He is ready to fight for the position, let’s hope it’s nothing serious as we need him.”

Scott McTominay thought he had put the visitors in the lead after putting the ball in the net in the tenth minute, but it was chalked off after Harry Maguire was deemed to be offside following a VAR review.

The opening half of the contest was a sluggish affair with few chances for either side, but the game burst into life after the break as Man United put the hosts under immediate pressure. But it was Fulham who looked more likely to break the deadlock following a series of corners that had the United defence creaking.

The Red Devils managed to pull out a winner from nowhere when Fernandes capitalised on Fulham’s inability to clear the ball out of the danger zone, as the Portuguese struck home from the edge of the box.
