Paul Scholes says former club Manchester United can’t afford to sack Erik ten Hag despite the club’s ninth defeat of the season at Copenhagen.
United crashed to a 4-3 defeat in a drama-filled Champions League game in Denmark on Wednesday evening, one which saw the Red Devils lead 2-0 before falling to defeat.
Marcus Rashford’s controversial first-half red card and a contentious penalty decision allowed Copenhagen back into the game to level before half-time.
Bruno Fernandes scored from the spot to restore Manchester United’s advantage in the second half, but the Danish side struck twice late on to stun the visitors and snatch a memorable win.
17-year-old Roony Bardghji’s late winner condemned United to a ninth defeat in 17 games in all competitions this season, while the result leaves Ten Hag’s team bottom of Group A and facing a battle to reach the knockout rounds.
Despite a disastrous start to the campaign, ex-United midfielder Scholes believes the club can not afford to sack Ten Hag and begin another rebuilding process.
“I still don’t feel like there’s that much pressure on Erik ten Hag. He had a good year and bought some time. He’s had bad injuries but nine defeats in 17 is not good enough,” Scholes told TNT Sports.
“I know United have sacked before, but I don’t think they can afford to keep doing that.
“Ten Hag got unlucky tonight, but United put up a good fight. They lacked a bit of leadership. It’s not easy to play away in Europe.
“It’s just that collapsing that’s hurting them. Once they concede one it feels like another is coming. You can’t keep doing that every week.”
