Kai Havertz may have kick started his Arsenal career after scoring a late winner at Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday evening.
The hosts came close to extending their 14-game unbeaten streak in London derbies as they managed to keep the Gunners at bay for the vast majority of the match.
But the German attacker came up with the decisive moment just ten minutes after Mikel Arteta sprung him from the bench, meeting Bukayo Saka’s cross to the back post with his head.
“Today I got it [the goal] and it paid back, I am just happy I got it for the team,” Havertz told TNT Sports.
“It was a brilliant goal and brilliant pass as well. I think we train this way as a team a lot, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard love to play those balls.
“It is hard work, nothing comes from itself and you have to work and have to believe. I tried to put my ego aside and the team is the important thing.”
It is just the second time Havertz has found the net in the Premier League since joining Arsenal from Chelsea in the summer, but he has retained the backing of the supporters, who chanted his name loudly at the end of the game.
“I am so thankful for these guys,” he said. “It is hard when a new signing comes and they pay a lot of money for you. I am just thankful they keep supporting me.”
Arsenal went top of the Premier League table on 30 points with 13 games played, leapfrogging Liverpool and Manchester City, who drew with each other earlier in the day.
