Ten Hag says Man United ‘keeper Onana ‘has done well’

Erik ten Hag has insisted that Andre Onana ‘has done well’ at Manchester United this season, despite the goalkeeper’s midweek mistakes against Galatasaray.

Onana’s position has come under serious scrutiny after a number of high-profile errors since signing from Inter Milan in a £47.2m deal, with the 27-year-old twice at fault during the 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.

The Cameroon international’s mistakes allowed the Turkish side back into the game in Istanbul, in a result which leaves the Red Devils’ Champions League hopes hanging in the balance.

Onana has made several mistakes since reuniting with former Ajax boss Ten Hag in English football, but the latter has backed his goalkeeper and says the statistics show Onana’s influence this season.

“If you analyse it, well then you see he is the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League based on stats,” said Ten Hag at his pre-match press conference, ahead of facing Newcastle at St James’ Park.

“His expected goals prevented is the second-best in the Premier League. He’s doing well.

“He knows that in the Champions League he has made some mistakes but, overall, in the first five months he has done well.”
