Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Liverpool defender Joel Matip is facing a long spell out after rupturing his ACL.
Matip was forced off during Liverpool’s 4-3 victory over Fulham at the weekend and missed Wednesday’s win over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.
Scans have now revealed the extent of the centre-back’s issue and Matip is facing months on the sidelines after injuring his anterior cruciate ligament.
“It’s an ACL, ruptured, so that’s what I unfortunately expected from the first second. Everything looked like that. Very unfortunate,” Klopp said following his side’s win at Bramall Lane.
Alexis Mac Allister joined Liverpool’s injury list after suffering a knee problem at Sheffield United. The Argentina international was withdrawn against the Blades, but Klopp is hopeful Mac Allister will not be sidelined for ‘too long’.
“Macca, it was a shame. Early, he stepped on his knee, there was a cut. As long as the wound was open, we just strapped it, obviously it was painful but he could play.
“Then we stitched it but then obviously it got a bit tighter there and then he couldn’t move anymore. Now we have to see how long that will take. I hope not too long.”
Liverpool next travel to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday lunchtime.
