Pochettino confident Chelsea are ‘building something’

Mauricio Pochettino is confident that Chelsea are ‘building something’ and has again called for time for his developing squad.

Chelsea’s inconsistent form continued with a 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Wednesday, a result that leaves Pochettino’s team 10th in the Premier League table.

The West Londoners have spent more than a billion pounds since Todd Boehly’s arrival as owner in 2022, but a recruitment drive focused primarily on young talent has left the Blues short of experience.

Ahead of facing Everton this weekend, Pochettino was asked whether he had inherited a hard task in turning Chelsea’s inexperienced and expensively assembled squad into a winning team.

“It’s a different position for sure but we knew when we accepted this offer that it’s going to be tough. We are going to challenge [for top four], yes. Maybe not now but for sure in the future. Who knows? [when asked how far in the future]. I hope it’s as soon as possible but for sure, we are going to challenge the top four, yes.

On how his players are developing, the Argentine added: “I think we need to give the players time, there’s a lot of players that have arrived. Now is not only to bring a player for eight years, it’s to work with them and try to put it all in context and create a dynamic. Now the most important thing is to create a platform where they find their place and feel they belong to this group and the team and the club.

“We know what we need to do, we know what we are doing, it’s just a matter of time. Sometimes that’s six months or maybe one year but we will arrive at the situation because we are building something that will pay off.”
