Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers are high on Newcastle’s wishlist to be the club’s next manager following their Saudi-backed takeover.
Newcastle, the Premier League, and the club’s new ownership announced the completion of their takeover on Thursday, a deal that ends Mike Ashley’s unpopular 14-year ownership and provides the Magpies with the wealthiest owners in world football.
Attentions will now turn to the mass changes expected at St James’ Park, including the position of manager Steve Bruce who has been an unpopular figure for much of his tenure and is expected to be sacked.
The Mail are reporting that Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers are amongst the names being considered as potential replacements for Bruce, the former understood to be monitoring developments with this season expected to be his last at Rangers.
Rodgers could also emerge as a leading target, with the Leicester manager having established himself as one of the best coaches in the Premier League in recent seasons, guiding the Foxes to successive fifth-place finishes and FA Cup success in 2020/21.
Amanda Staveley – the chief executive of PCP Capital partners – has outlined the owner’s ambitious plans to turn Newcastle into one of football’s elite sides, given the backing of the company alongside Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the billionaire Rueben brothers (RB Sports & Media).
The deal has been finalised after the Premier League received ‘legally binding assurances’ that the club would not be controlled by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, whilst a dispute involving beIN Sports over the illegal streaming of Premier League football has also been resolved.
