Chelsea and Arsenal chase ex-Coventry forward Gyokeres

Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle are among the clubs interested in signing Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyökeres.

Gyökeres has been in brilliant form since signing for Sporting from Championship side Coventry last summer, with the Swedish striker having scored 15 goals in 18 games in all competitions.

The 25-year-old has 13 goal involvements in 12 games in Portugal’s Primeira Liga, performances which have attracted notable interest from across Europe.

Turkish journalist and transfer expert Ekrem Konur has revealed Chelsea have now joined the race to sign Gyökeres, with Arsenal, Newcastle, Inter Milan and Fulham also all interested.

Gyökeres signed for Sporting in a €20m (£17.2m) deal last summer, after scoring 40 goals in 97 games for Coventry over the last two seasons. The forward fired the Sky Blues to the Championship play-off final last season, but defeat to Luton saw him sold in the summer.

Gyökeres, who earlier spent four seasons at Brighton without making a senior appearance, has been named as the Player of the Month in the Primeira Liga for September, October and November.

His form has helped Sporting to the top of Portugal’s top flight, while Ruben Amorim’s side have also sealed progress to the Europa League’s knockout rounds.
