Man United to consider sales after Champions League exit

Manchester United will consider sales in the January transfer window as the club look to recoup revenue lost from their early Champions League exit.

Erik ten Hag’s team exited Europe this week after a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich, a result which saw the Red Devils finish bottom of their group. United’s fourth-placed finish also means the club miss out on a Europa League spot, with Ten Hag’s team out of continental competition entirely.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the club’s Champions League exit will cost them at least £25m in revenue. As a result, United will consider the sale of players in January in a bid to balance their Financial Fair Play (FFP) concerns, provided any exits do not ‘unduly weaken’ Ten Hag’s squad.

Donny van de Beek is expected to leave after a nightmare spell in the Premier League and talks have been held over a loan exit to Eintracht Frankfurt. Spanish league leaders Girona have also been credited with interest.

Jadon Sancho is another who could move on after a public fallout with Ten Hag. The winger has been training away from the first-team squad since September, having been dropped for the defeat at Arsenal. Ten Hag criticised Sancho’s application in training, comments the latter refuted on social media.

Elsewhere, Raphael Varane and Casemiro have also been linked with leaving. Each are among the highest-paid players in the squad, but the former has fallen out of favour in recent weeks and has not started a Premier League game since September 30.

Casemiro, meanwhile, had failed to produce the performances of last season before his recent spell on the sidelines through injury. The Brazil international has been linked with Paris Saint-Germain and several Saudi Pro League sides.

Anthony Martial’s deal, which expires at the end of the season, will not be extended. The Frenchman will be free to negotiate with foreign sides from January, with a view to a free transfer move in the summer. United would be willing to sanction his sale next month, should a suitable offer arrive.
