Erik ten Hag is confident that Manchester United can win at Liverpool on Sunday, as the club return to the scene of a record-breaking defeat last season.
Ten Hag’s team were thrashed 7-0 in the same fixture in March, the club’s joint-heaviest competitive defeat of all time and the biggest ever win recorded in meetings between the two North West rivals.
The Red Devils head into the clash in poor form, after back-to-back defeats to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich over the past week, with the latter confirming the club’s elimination from Europe.
Despite those disappointments, Ten Hag is confident that his team can beat the table-topping Merseysiders this weekend.
“I think everyone is highly motivated when they go to Anfield. It is a great place to go. We know it is going to be tough, but I think every top footballer wants to thrive in that challenge,” the Dutchman said at his pre-match press conference.
“We take that in our memory(the 7-0 defeat), but also have to learn from it and on Sunday we can prove [we have done] that.
“There is no concern. I am here to win. I have to make the team play better. We are inconsistent. I have to work on the team, to make sure they are going to play for long periods at a high level.
“We will put out a team that can challenge. I am confident I can put out a team that can win there.”
Regarding team news, Ten Hag confirmed Harry Maguire will miss the clash but Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford could return.
“Harry is not available for the coming games, but we don’t think his injury will be long term.
“Luke Shaw trained this morning, we think we have him for Sunday. Marcus Rashford is also back.”
