Scott McTominay called captaining Manchester United ‘the biggest honour’ of his career after leading the side to a goalless draw at Liverpool.
McTominay was named Manchester United captain for the trip to Anfield, with the Scotland midfielder wearing the armband the absence of several leading figures.
Erik ten Hag’s side battled to a 0-0 draw to end Liverpool’s 100% home record in the Premier League this season, earning a hard-fought result after a record-breaking 7-0 defeat at the same stadium earlier this year.
McTominay was pleased with the performance from his side and spoke of his proud at wearing the armband, having been linked with a transfer away from Old Trafford in the summer.
“It’s always a hot start here and we couldn’t forget about last year, but the boys did everything they could have,” the 27-year-old told Sky Sports.
“We’ve got a lot of young players and they conducted themselves well. I’m proud to lead them out, it’s just a shame we couldn’t win. It’s the biggest honour of my career to captain this football club. I’m thankful to be in this position.
“In football there is always things that can happen and speculation but I have a clear mind and always do my best for the club on the pitch and with no excuses.
“I don’t care what anyone else think or says about me. I just want to play well for this club and that’s final.”
