Real Madrid keen on Raphael Varane return

Real Madrid are keen on a deal to re-sign Raphael Varane from Manchester United in the January transfer window.

Varane has been linked with an exit from Manchester United after falling out of favour this season, with the former France international having started just six times in the Premier League.

Bayern Munich have been credited with interest in signing the 30-year-old in the January transfer window, but could face competition from Real Madrid.

Sport are reporting that Real are ready to rival the German champion’s interest in Varane, who made 360 appearances during a decorated first spell at the club that delivered three La Liga titles and four Champions League triumphs.

Long-term injuries to David Alaba and Eder Militao have left the Spanish side short at centre-back, with Antonio Rudiger and Nacho the only recognised senior central defensive options in Carlo Ancelotti’s squad. Aurélien Tchouaméni has deputised out of position in the backline in recent weeks.

Bayern Munich also require defensive depth, with Kim Min-jae set to depart to take part in the Asia Cup with South Korea in January. Varane is an option under consideration and his current contract expires in June 2024, though United have the option of an additional year.

Meanwhile, reports from L’Equipe claim Varane is open to re-joining another former club, Lens. The centre-back came through the academy system at Lens before departing to sign for Real Madrid as a teenager.
