Chelsea and Fulham battling for AZ striker

Chelsea and Fulham are among the clubs interested in signing AZ Alkmaar striker Vangelis Pavlidis this month.

The West London rivals have sent scouts to watch the Greek goal-getter in action this season, with Pavlidis having enjoyed a prolific run of form for AZ. The 25-year-old has scored 69 goals in 118 games across the last two-and-a-half seasons, since arriving from divisional rivals Willem II.

That form has alerted the Premier League duo with the Evening Standard reporting Chelsea and Fulham are considering approaches in the January window. AC Milan and Barcelona have also tracked his progress in the Netherlands.

Pavlidis is the joint-leading scorer in the Eredivisie this season, alongside Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez, and has averaged a goal every 72 minutes in the Dutch top-flight in 2023/24. This week, the forward discussed his future and said he feels ready to take ‘the next step’ in his career.

“Are there things going on? I don’t talk about that now — I prefer to keep that to myself,” Pavlidis told De Telegraaf.

“It is clear that I am physically and technically ready to take the next step. The transfer window in the winter is of course different than in the summer. It is more difficult in several ways. That is why I don’t know whether this is the right time.

“Everyone knows that I wanted to take the next step last summer. In the end it was not the right time, because a suitable club did not present itself.”
