Real Madrid are assessing the conditions of a deal to sign Erling Haaland from Manchester City, amid doubts surrounding the club’s move for Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe is a long-term target for the Spanish side and is out of contract at the end of the season, with the France captain having been widely expected to move to the Bernabeu.
However, recent comments from Paris Saint-Germain have cast doubt on Mbappe’s future, with the Ligue 1 side’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi having spoken of the forward’s happiness in France this week.
Spanish outlet AS are also reporting that Real Madrid view Liverpool as competition for Mbappe, who has said publicly that he remains undecided on his future.
Mbappe has scored a club-record 237 goals in all competitions for PSG and has won the Ligue 1 leading scorer accolade in five straight seasons. The forward has been the long-term ambition for Real Madrid, who have failed with bids to sign Mbappe in 2021 and 2022.
Real Madrid came close to signing the 25-year-old on a free transfer in the latter of those summers, only for Mbappe to do a U-turn and sign a new deal with PSG. Carlo Ancelotti’s side are keen to avoid a repeat and are weighing up a move for Haaland as an alternative.
Speculation has continued to surround a release clause in Haaland’s contract at Manchester City. AS are reporting that the conditions of the reported release clause are closer to ‘€100m than €200m’, a modest fee for a forward considered arguably the best out-and-out goalscorer in world football.
The 23-year-old scored a record-breaking 36 goals in the Premier League last season and is the joint-leading scorer in the division once again, having hit 14 goals in 15 appearances in 2023/24.
