Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool must ‘keep winning’ to remain in front in the Premier League title race.
Liverpool head to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League boasting a slender advantage at the top of the table, with Manchester City a point behind in second and Arsenal another point further back.
The form of the three teams has opened up the prospect of a fascinating multi-team title race and Klopp said his team have no margin for error ahead of the Premier League run-in.
“We are only one point above Man City and two above Arsenal but that means nothing,” Klopp said at his pre-match press conference.
“60 points is a statement for that moment of the season but stay on 60 and I’m not sure we would qualify for the Champions League, so we better keep winning matches.”
Liverpool won the Carabao Cup last weekend and remain in contention for four trophies, in a campaign which has echoes of the 2021/22 season. Klopp’s side won both domestic cups, but narrowly missed out in the Premier League and Champions League.
Asked if the current season feels similar, Klopp said: “No. It was a much more comfortable squad situation as far as I remember it. We would make massive changes between the competitions.
“I’m pretty sure it was a completely different squad situation. You can’t really compare it. What it showed us is we can fight for everything and win some things [FA Cup and Carabao Cup], it was a successful season. Hopefully, this can be a successful season too.”
Liverpool have bounced back from the setback of losing to title rivals Arsenal last month, winning five consecutive games in all competitions. Klopp admits recent results have been important after below-par showing at the Emirates.
“The results have been important but I don’t think it’s a response to the Arsenal game, we always have to win and we know that.
“We probably weren’t as good as we needed to be against Arsenal but that can happen.
“You have to use the lesser good things as much as you use the good things. We had many lesser good things against Arsenal.”
