Van Dijk admits Man United draw feels like a loss for Liverpool

Virgil van Dijk said Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United ‘feels like a loss’ after the Reds were punished for failing to take their chances at Old Trafford.

Liverpool dominated the game and created a host of opportunities, with Luis Diaz firing the Reds into a deserved first-half lead. Jurgen Klopp’s team had 15 efforts on goal before half-time, with Manchester United failing to register a single shot.

The game turned after a mistake from Jarell Quansah, however, as the young defender’s slack pass was punished in ruthless fashion. Bruno Fernandes strode onto the loose ball and fired a long-range effort into the vacant goal, with Caoimhin Kelleher out of position.

Manchester United grew in confidence after that goal and scored a stunning second through Kobbie Mainoo, who turned sharply and bent an effort into the far top corner.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty, after Harvey Elliott had been brought down inside the box, rescued a point for Liverpool, but Van Dijk said his team were disappointed with the result after a wasteful performance.

Their 28 shots were the most an opposition team has recorded at Old Trafford since the data was first collected (2003/04).

“It feels Like a loss, it is our fault again,” Van Dijk said to BBC Match of the Day.

“We had so many chances and we should finish the game off.

“Unfortunately the individual mistake that happened with the equaliser and we had so much time to put it right, but we were in a rush.

“Still after being 2-1 down we created so much.

“We should have been 2-0 up at least (at half-time), but in football unfortunately if these things don’t happen you give them the feeling they could come back and it happened.”
