Newcastle star backed to become ‘one of the best players in the world’

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak could turn into “one of the best players in the world”, according to teammate Anthony Gordon.

The Swedish international scored twice as the Magpies romped to a 4-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday afternoon.

Gordon and Fabian Schar also got on the scoresheet as Eddie Howe’s tactical game plan paid off to perfection.

“We knew we couldn’t play our normal way against this team because they are so good with the ball,” Gordon told TNT Sports. “So we changed tactically, went man for man, and the game plan that the manager set us up with was outstanding.”

The 23-year-old winger scored just two minutes after Isak’s opener on the half hour mark, giving Newcastle the perfect platform to win the match.

“I think especially here at St James’ with the crowd, if we can score back to back, quite close then it can feel like the stadium is suffocating you,” he said.

“Trust me, I have been here as an away player and it definitely feels like that. It came at a vital time and from there I felt like we controlled the game.”

Gordon found it “hard to describe” what makes Isak such a good player, but the former Everton man believes the forward can go right to the top of the game.

“You can see on the pitch he is so, so gifted,” he said. “He can become one of the best players in the world, and when fit he is so good to play with.

“For the assist I just passed him the ball and then he sat a few players down, it was all him. What a player and more importantly what a person.”

The win is a huge boost to Newcastle’s chances of qualifying for Europe next season, moving them into sixth place in the Premier League table.

“It’s massive,” Gordon said. “We’ve had a taste for it this season and we want next year to be the same. With performances like we put in today, that won’t put us far wrong off that.”
