Erik ten Hag was uncommitted on the future of Jadon Sancho at Manchester United after asked for comment on the winger’s impressive performance on loan at Borussia Dortmund this week.
Sancho starred as Borussia Dortmund took a step towards the Champions League final with a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.
The 24-year-old became the first Englishman in history to complete 11+ take-ons in a Champions League fixture and the first player to do so in a semi-final since Lionel Messi in 2008.
Sancho rejoined Dortmund on loan in the January transfer window, following a disappointing period in the Premier League. The winger’s exit came after a fallout with Ten Hag, who criticised the player’s performance in training after dropping Sancho from the squad to face Arsenal in September.
Sancho refuted the claims from his manager, leading to his exile from the first-team squad and subsequent exit. Following his performance this week, Ten Hag was asked whether there was any route back for Sancho into his plans at Old Trafford.
“So let’s say this: yesterday he played very good and he’s a very good player,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Crystal Palace on Monday night.
“Yesterday he showed why Manchester United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for Manchester United, which is good.
“I’m happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday, and we’ll see what is going to happen in the future.”
Ten Hag discussed how his side will address the summer transfer window, following the appointment of Jason Wilcox as the club’s new technical director and arrival of Ineos as minority owners.
“[There’s] always a lot of work, it’s normal when you go into a transfer window, but the injuries had a big impact.
“We know also we are still below the levels from the expectations Manchester United has so we have to catch up and I’m now going into my fifth window – two windows quite OK, two we missed – so we have to make new improvements to the squad. But there is a base of this squad that is very good.”
