Leipzig look to ward off Premier League suitors for Sesko

RB Leipzig are aiming to ward off interest from the Premier League by offering Benjamin Sesko a contract extension with the club.

Sesko signed for Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg last summer and has had a fine first season in the Bundesliga despite failing to nail down an automatic role in the side. The 20-year-old has scored 18 goals in all competitions, including 14 in just 17 starts in the league.

That form and Sesko’s high potential have alerted several Premier League clubs with Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all linked with a player who has a reported release clause in the region of €65m (£56m).

However, Leipzig have opened talks with Sesko’s representatives over a lucrative extension to his current deal at the Red Bull Arena.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the German side are offering Sesko a one-year extension on improved teams, in a bid to persuade the Slovenian striker to turn down interest from England.

Arsenal have lacked a recognised centre-forward for much of the campaign with Kai Havertz used further forward, while Chelsea and Manchester United are seeking additional competition for Nicolas Jackson and Rasmus Hojlund respectively.

Sesko’s stock could rise at this summer’s European Championship where Slovenia will face England in the group stage. He has scored 11 goals in 28 appearances for the national team.
