Manchester United are set to step up their interest in signing Girona defender Miguel Gutiérrez as the club look to bring in a new left-back this summer.
Ongoing issues for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have left the Red Devils short at left-back this season with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka forced to deputise on their unfavored side.
Shaw has been named in the England squad for this summer’s European Championship despite not featuring in the Premier League since February and the 28-year-old made just 12 league appearances in 2023-24.
Malacia’s unavailability has been even greater with the Dutchman having not kicked a ball all season after a setback from a knee operation undergone last summer.
Left-back is a focus for the club’s new recruitment team and sources of The Football Faithful have said Gutiérrez is a player of interest. The 22-year-old has impressed in a Girona team that secured Champions League qualification this season, with a best-ever finish of third in La Liga.
Gutiérrez has two goals and six assists for the City Football Group-owned Catalan club this season and is fourth in La Liga for expected assists.
Arsenal have also checked in on the progress of the Spaniard with Oleksandr Zinchenko having failed to convince in his second season at the Emirates, while Real Madrid have an €8m (£6.8m) buy-back option having sold the player to Girona in 2022.
Real Madrid are reportedly considering activating that clause, should Los Blancos fail in their pursuit of signing Alphonso Davies from Bayern Munich.
For other clubs, Gutiérrez’s release clause is believed to be in the region of €35m (£29.8m). Manchester United have sold left-back Alvaro Fernandez to Benfica for €6m after the Portuguese side triggered the permanent clause in his loan move to Lisbon.
