Wayne Rooney lined up for management return

Plymouth Argyle are interested in appointing Wayne Rooney as the club’s new manager.

The Championship side are considering an approach to bring in Rooney as their new manager as the club seek a permanent replacement for Ian Foster, who was sacked in April after just three months in the job.

Plymouth won promotion to the second tier under Steven Schumacher in 2022-23 but the promotion-winning coach departed to take charge of Stoke City in December. Foster was brought in and struggled to make an impact before his dismissal, though Plymouth secured Championship safety with a 1-0 win over Hull on the final weekend.

The Pilgrims are now seeking a new direction and Sky Sports have revealed Rooney is on the club’s shortlist.

The former England captain was sacked by Birmingham City in January after just 83 days in charge and is cautious over a return to management, following a dismal spell at St Andrews.

Rooney took charge of Birmingham with the club fifth in the table, but a poor campaign saw him sacked after less than three months. Birmingham were relegated to League One at the end of the season.

Rooney has since returned to media opportunities and is understood to be in no rush to return to management. However, Plymouth are prepared to offer Manchester United’s record goalscorer a chance to return to dugout, after previous spells in charge of Derby and DC United.
