‘Nobody believed in us’ – Man United complete shock FA Cup final win over Man City

Manchester United sealed a surprise win over rivals Manchester City on Saturday to claim the FA Cup for the 13th time in their history.

Alejandro Garnacho capitalised on a mix-up at the back to give the Red Devils a shock lead after half an hour, which was doubled by Kobbie Mainoo just nine minutes later.

Pep Guardiola brought Jeremy Doku off the bench at the interval and it paid off with a late goal, but it was ultimately nothing more than a consolation as Man United held on for victory.

“Incredible,” Garnacho told BBC One. “Nobody believed in us. But we’re a team, all together. We fought, the game of our lives.”

The Argentine winger paid tribute to Man United’s “incredible” support on a special day for the club. “The fans are always there when we win, or lose, home or away.”

There was also massive praise for Mainoo, who claimed the Player of the Match award. “Incredible. The best player in the squad and he’s the youngest. We’re also good friends. I’m so happy for him.”

Mainoo said his first trophy as a senior player means “absolutely everything”. “It’s been a tough season with ups and downs. This is the only thing we’ve had to look forward to. Last year I was in the stands.

“We knew we had to come together. The preparation for this game has been amazing. We’ve shown we can compete and win games.”

Asked about making the Euro 2024 squad and potentially being on the plane to Germany, Mainoo said: “I just want to focus on this, I can’t look too far ahead.”
