Chelsea ‘agree’ €14m transfer after missing out on Calafiori

Chelsea are on the verge of completing their fifth signing of the summer transfer window.

Despite coming close to breaching the spending limit set by the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules last month, the Blues have been busy in the market, signing Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Now they are on the verge of signing a new defender, with Renato Veiga set to join the club in the next few days.

Chelsea have ‘agreed’ on a €14 million (£11.9m) deal with FC Basel for the player, which does not include a sell-on clause, according to The Athletic.

The 20-year-old is due to undergo a medical before completing the move and signing an eight-year contract with the south west London outfit.

The transfer comes after Chelsea missed out on the signing of Riccardo Calafiori, who is widely expected to join Arsenal for around €50m (£42.5m).

Who is new Chelsea signing Renato Veiga?

Renato Veiga is a left-footed defender who will offer Chelsea versatility in the backline, as he can play centrally or as a left-back, but is also capable of being a no.6 in midfield. It’s expected he will perform the role of inverted full-back under new manager Enzo Maresca.

The youngster came through the academy at Sporting Club in Lisbon, where he made 31 appearances for the B team. He spent the 2022/23 campaign on loan with Augsburg, making 13 appearances in the Bundesliga.

In 2023 Veiga signed for Swiss side FC Basel for a reported transfer fee of €4.6m and the deal included a ten percent sell-on clause. He went on to play 23 times in the Swiss Super League, scoring two goals and providing one assist last season.
