Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has taken a cheeky swipe back at Gary Neville after Spain were crowned winners of Euro 2024.
Spain beat England 2-1 in Berlin on Sunday to be crowned European champions for a record fourth time.
Cucurella has been an integral part of Spain’s success, impressing with his tenacious performances at left-back for Luis de la Fuente’s side.
The 25-year-old assisted Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner against England in the final with a brilliant cross into the penalty area after a trademark surge forward.
Ahead of the tournament, former England defender Gary Neville suggested Cucurella could be a weak-link in Spain’s campaign after a tough time at club level with Chelsea.
“He’s not been convincing at Chelsea. He’s played a few games towards the end of the season,” Neville said in his punditry for ITV.
“He’s aggressive, he’s tenacious, he’s a busy little full back. The price tag still astounds everyone to this day.
“The Spanish defence, it’s got a lot of experience now but there’s something just missing from Spain that makes you feel like they’re going to go all the way. I have to say that him being at left back is a good example of why we think that.”
Following La Roja’s triumph this summer, Cucurella issued his own response. After sharing an image featuring Neville’s comments to his Instagram account, the Spaniard wrote: “We went all the way Gary. Thanks for your support.”
