Sell-on clause issue delaying defender’s Arsenal arrival

Riccardo Calafiori’s transfer to Arsenal has stalled as Bologna look to renegotiate a sell-on clause with the defender’s former club.

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Calafiori from Bologna for a fee in the region of £37.5m, but complications have emerged as the Italians look to renegotiate old terms.

Bologna signed the 22-year-old from FC Basel for just £5m last summer and the Swiss side placed a 50% sell-on clause into that deal.

Bologna are desperate to avoid losing half of their profit to Basel and have attempted to reduce the sell-on clause. However, Basel are insistent they should be owed the full amount.

The issue has complicated Arsenal’s deal with La Gazzetta dello Sport reporting that their £37.5m bid is only deemed acceptable if Bologna receive a higher portion of that fee.

Arsenal are waiting for a resolution to be found between Bologna and Basel as Mikel Arteta looks to complete his first major signing of the summer transfer window.

Calafiori impressed as Bologna shocked Serie A to secure Champions League qualification last season and broke into the Italian national team ahead of Euro 2024.
