Patrick Vieira is a candidate to become the next head coach of the United States Men’s National Team after a shock exit from French side Strasbourg.
Vieira has departed the Ligue 1 outfit by mutual consent after just one season in charge. The former Arsenal captain was appointed Strasbourg manager last summer, with the French side majority owned by BlueCo, the same consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital who purchased Chelsea in 2022.
“We would like to express our gratitude and thank Patrick for the work he has accomplished during this first phase of the project and we wish him much success in the future,β Strasbourg president Marc Keller said.
βHe will always be welcome at the club.β
Vieira is now understood to be in the frame to take over the USA. Gregg Berhalter was fired as head coach of the Stars and Stripes earlier this month following their group-stage exit at the Copa America, becoming the first-ever host nation to be eliminated in the first round.
The USA are now considering candidates and Vieira’s experience of American football, having coached New York City, make him an attractive option. A top-level replacement is being sought as the USA prepare to co-host the 2026 World Cup, alongside Canada and Mexico.
During his playing career, Vieira won five Serie A titles and three Premier League crowns, captaining Arsenal to their 2003-04 unbeaten ‘Invincibles’ season. For France, he won 107 caps and lifted both the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship.
He has coached New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace and Strasbourg since beginning his coaching career in the academy of former side Manchester City.
