Atletico reach €95m agreement to sign World Cup winner

Atletico Madrid have reached a ‘total agreement’ with Manchester City to sign Julian Alvarez in a deal that could reach €95m (£82m).

Alvarez has expressed an interest in leaving the Premier League champions in search of a more prominent role, having operated in a deeper role due to the presence of Erling Haaland at the Etihad.

The Athletic have revealed that Atletico have now agreed a package with the Citizens that could see the Spaniards pay a fee of €95m including add-ons, in a transfer that will represent a record sale for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The 24-year-old will now hold talks with Atletico to discuss personal terms ahead of an imminent move to La Liga.

Alvarez made 54 appearances in all competitions for City in 2023-24 and scored 19 goals, but has featured only sporadically in his preferred centre-forward position.

His decorated career has already seen Alvarez win a wealth of major honours, including the World Cup, two Copa America titles, the Champions League, Copa Libertadores and two Premier League titles.

He is set to become the latest big-name signing for Atletico this summer, following the arrivals of Robin Le Normand and Alexander Sorloth. Alvarez’s arrival is set to pave the path for Samu Omorodion to move to Chelsea after a £35m bid from the West Londoners.
