David de Gea will undergo a medical with Fiorentina on Friday as the goalkeeper closes in on a return to football.
De Gea has been without a club since leaving Manchester United as a free agent last summer, with the Spaniard’s contract not renewed at Old Trafford.
Fiorentina are now nearing an agreement to sign the experienced shot-stopper, who will sign a one-year contract with the Italian side with the option to extend for a further season. He is set to become La Viola’s fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Moise Kean, Marin Pongračić and Nicolás Valentini.
De Gea will arrive after a decorated career in English football. The 33-year-old had spent 12 years in the Premier League, where he won one league title, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the Europa League with the Red Devils.
De Gea made 545 appearances in all competitions for the club – the most by an overseas player – and was named Manchester United Player of the Season on a joint-record four occasions.
He also twice won the Premier League’s Golden Glove, including during his final season in the division in 2022-23.
