Liverpool at ‘final stages’ for first Arne Slot signing

Liverpool and Valencia are in the ‘final stages’ of negotiations for goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili to join the Premier League side.

Mamardashvili is set to become the first signing of the Arne Slot era at Liverpool with the two teams set to hold a further round of talks this week to finalise the transfer.

The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the best emerging goalkeepers in Europe and impressed at the European Championship this summer, leading the tournament for saves as debutants Georgia reached the Euro 2024 last 16. Mamardashvili also led La Liga for expected goals prevented in 2023/24.

The fee involved will be in the region of €35m, while the agreement will see Mamardashvili remain on loan at Valencia for the current campaign.

The goalkeeper was linked with moving to Bournemouth on loan after arriving in the Premier League but now looks set to stay in Spain for the 2024/25 season. Mamardashvili’s loan could even be extended for a further season, dependent on Alisson’s future at Anfield.

The latter is contracted to Liverpool until 2027 and remains one of the world’s best goalkeepers. However, there has been interest in the Brazil international from the Saudi Pro League in recent months.
