Chelsea winger Noni Madueke is set to be rewarded for his impressive start to the season with a first call-up to the England squad.
Lee Carsley is set to name his first squad as England interim manager on Thursday afternoon, ahead of September’s UEFA Nations League games with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Madueke is set to be included after marking his first Premier League appearance of the campaign with a second-half hat-trick against Wolves last weekend. The 22-year-old scored three goals in 14 minutes as Chelsea won 5-2 at Molineux, having also netted against Swiss side Servette in Europe last week.
Carsley knows the player well having worked with Madueke during his time as u-21 boss. The winger has seven goals in 20 appearances for England at u-21 level and formed part of the team that won the European Championship under Carsley’s management in 2023.
Madueke’s Chelsea teammate, Levi Colwill is also set to return to the senior England squad.
Jack Grealish set to return to England squad
According to The Athletic, Jack Grealish is another who will return to the England squad. The Manchester City winger was a headline omission from Gareth Southgate’s squad for Euro 2024, following an injury-hit season at the Etihad.
The 28-year-old has made just one appearance so far this season but is set to be named in the squad for September’s games.
Trippier out after announcing England retirement
Kieran Trippier is one name who will not be included after the right-back announced his retirement from England duty on Thursday. The 33-year-old has decided to step down after winning 54 caps for the Three Lions. He represented England at four major tournaments.
