Manchester United ‘convinced’ injury-hit star will succeed

Erik ten Hag has said he is ‘convinced’ that Mason Mount will be a success at Manchester United following a difficult start to his career with the club.

Mount endured an injury-hit debut season following his £55m arrival from Chelsea in 2023, with the midfielder restricted just five starts in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old featured prominently during pre-season and started the opening two games of the current season before suffering another setback. A hamstring injury has sidelined Mount in recent weeks though he has stepped up his recovery with a return to light training this week.

Ten Hag discussed Mount’s recent struggles with form and fitness, with the midfielder not selected for England since the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Dutchman said everyone at Manchester United are ‘convinced’ that Mount can play an important role for the side once he regains fitness and gets a regular run of games.

“Already we have seen glimpses in the start of the season what he is capable of, and it was not a long time out,” Ten Hag said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

Ten Hag says Mount needs run of Man United games

“It was a quick turnaround back. But what he needs is a period, a longer period, where he can train fully with the team and play with the team, because then he can come up into speed, and then everyone will see his qualities.

“But, yeah, I am totally convinced I have seen again in the start of the season what he can bring to a team, and I’m sure once he is in a longer run-in, he will really improve.”
