Aston Villa are considering moves for Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez as the club’s new manager, but former assistant John Terry is not in the frame to replace the sacked Dean Smith.
Smith was dismissed after Villa slumped to a fifth consecutive Premier League defeat at Southampton on Friday evening, with the club currently just two points above the relegation places following the alarming run of form.
The Villa board are now considering candidates to fill the vacant role and the Sun are reporting that Steven Gerrard and Roberto Martinez have emerged as the frontrunners for the position.
Gerrard has been continually linked with Premier League positions after impressing during his first senior role at Rangers, leading the Scottish side to a first league title in a decade with an unbeaten league campaign in 2020/21.
Martinez has also emerged as a target for sides with the Spaniard believed to be open to returning to club management, the Belgium boss having previous Premier League experience at the likes of Wigan and Everton.
However, John Terry’s lack of experience has ruled out the former assistant for the position and the 40-year-old is not believed to be in the running to succeed Smith.
Smith’s three-year reign saw him guide Villa back into the Premier League and consolidate in the top flight, but the club’s board will now seek a new direction and assess potential managerial appointments during November’s international break.
