Bruno Fernandes has backed Ruben Amorim for a ‘top job’ in the Premier League amid links to Manchester United.
Amorim has been courted by several of Europe’s elite in recent seasons after an excellent period in charge of Sporting Lisbon. The 39-year-old led Sporting to their first Primeira Liga title in 19 years in 2020/21 and added a second Portuguese title last season.
Sporting’s success and aesthetic brand of football has seen Amorim’s name linked with multiple vacancies at top clubs, with Barcelona, Chelsea, Spurs and Liverpool among those credited with interest over the past two seasons.
Manchester United have been named as a potential destination for the coach, as pressure mounts on Erik ten Hag’s position at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are 14th in the table after their worst-ever start to a season in the Premier League era.
Fernandes was not asked directly on Amorim and Manchester United, but endorsed a future move for the coach to a top-five European league. The 30-year-old has kept a close eye on Amorim’s tenure at his former team and believes he has the ‘qualities’ to thrive in English football.
“Since Mr Amorim arrived at Sporting, it has been one of the teams to practice better football,” Fernandes told CNN Portugal.
“They have been consistent, the signings have been right and they are in a very good moment. It’s a very well-prepared team.
“In relation to Amorim, it shows at this moment he is prepared. Coaching Sporting and winning championships is not easy, Sporting went 20 years without winning championships and Amorim arrived and has already won two. This shows that the work has been done well.
“If he could manage to do the same in England, Spain or anywhere else, you will never know until you get there, but I am sure his qualities are there for everyone to see.”
