Manchester United summer talks with German manager revealed

Manchester United reportedly held talks with Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß about the prospect of taking over in the summer.

The Red Devils held exploratory talks with several coaching candidates in the summer, as new co-owners Ineos deliberated change in the dugout.

Erik ten Hag came under pressure after missing out on Champions League qualification, though success in the FA Cup persuaded United to extend his deal.

German outlet BILD have revealed that Hoeneß was approached to gauge his interest in the position. The 42-year-old led Stuttgart to a runners-up finish in the Bundesliga and Champions League football in 2023/24, just a season after the side narrowly avoided relegation from Germany’s top division.

However, Hoeneß informed Manchester United of his desire to remain with Stuttgart and continue his project with the club. He is contracted at the German side until 2027.

It remains to be seen whether interest in Hoeneß is revisited, amid mounting pressure on Ten Hag’s position. United are 14th in the Premier League after seven games following the club’s worst start to a season in 34 years.
