Bruno Fernandes is hopeful that Ruben Amorim can bring excitement back to Manchester United.
Amorim will take charge of the club during November’s international break having agreed a two-and-a-half year deal.
The 39-year-old arrives from Sporting Lisbon, who he has led to two league titles. The first of those Portuguese crowns ended a 19-year wait for the capital club and Amorim will now be tasked with reviving the fortunes of the Red Devils.
Fernandes, who made 137 appearances for Sporting before his move to the Premier League, has been a keen watcher of Amorim’s achievements in Lisbon. Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Sunday, he outlined his hope that Amorim can bring the same level of excitement to Old Trafford.
“I am a big fan of Sporting and watch a lot of their games,” Fernandes said to BBC Sport.
“Ruben Amorim brought the excitement back to the club – it was a little bit split when he came [to Sporting]. He transformed everything and brought everyone together.”
Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the draw with Chelsea, though Moises Caicedo’s brilliant equaliser earned Chelsea a point. Both sides were below their best in the game and Fernandes said the feeling in the dressing room was disappointment.
“It was a lot of disappointment in the dressing room. We could have won the game,” Fernandes reflected on the draw with Chelsea to BBC Sport.
“We get the point and we can be happy for that. We need to be disappointed because we’re far back in the league.”
