Ruben Amorim wants Manchester United to make Napoli winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia his first major signing as manager.
Amorim was officially confirmed as Manchester United manager on Friday with the Portuguese coach set to begin his tenure later this month. The 39-year-old will be tasked with rebuilding the Red Devils, who have endured their worst start to a season since 1986.
Amorim has won plaudits for his work at Sporting Lisbon, who he led to a drought-breaking Primeira Liga title in 2020/21 and a second Portuguese championship last season.
According to Caught Offside, he wants to make Kvaratskhelia his first signing in English football. The Georgian has emerged as one of Serie A’s standout stars at Napoli, after helping the club to a first Scudetto in 33 years in 2022/23.
Kvaratskhelia was named as Serie A’s Most Valuable Player following that triumph after leading the league for assists. The 23-year-old has five goals in 11 league games so far this season and is valued at around £90m at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium.
Given a spent of around £200m in the summer, Amorim could be forced to wait until the end of the campaign before funds are freed for big name additions.
Napoli are hoping that Kvaratskhelia will turn down interest from Europe to sign a new deal, with negotiations ongoing between the player’s representatives and the Italian side. His current contract expires in 2026.
