Slot says Guardiola extension is ‘good news’ for the Premier League

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has said Pep Guardiola’s contract extension at Manchester City is ‘good news’ for the Premier League.

Guardiola has penned a new two-year deal with the Premier League champions, ending speculation surrounding his future at the Etihad. The Spaniard’s deal was due to expire in the summer.

Guardiola has led the Citizens to six Premier League titles in the last seven seasons and Slot’s league-leading Liverpool side is currently aiming to dethrone the champions this season.

However, the Dutchman believes that Guardiola is ‘maybe the best manager’ in the Premier League and said his new deal is good for the division.

“It’s good news for City and for the league because everyone wants the best managers and the best players over here,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Southampton this weekend.

“He is definitely one of the best managers, maybe the best manager.

“He’s won four titles in a row. If he did decide to leave, with the players they’ve got, they wouldn’t be at the bottom of the league.”

Slot provided an update on the fitness of his squad and said Alisson remains unavailable despite returning to training.

“We are careful with everyone, especially when it comes to muscle injuries. Alisson is training with the goalkeepers but not with the team. He is getting better but is not ready for Sunday.”
