Manchester United plan January spree as Amorim era stalls

Manchester United are ready to embark on a €180m (£149.2m) transfer spree in the January transfer window to ignite the Ruben Amorim era.

Amorim’s appointment as head coach has not led to a lift in results with United mired in the Premier League’s bottom half at Christmas for the first in in 35 years. The Portuguese coach has won just four of his first nine games and the Red Devils are reportedly preparing to free finances to strengthen.

Despite investing around £200m in the squad in the summer, United are nine points adrift of the top four. The club’s board are now ready to back Amorim in the January window, as the new manager looks to bring in players to suit his system.

According to Fichajes, Amorim wants to sign Viktor Gyokeres from former club Sporting Lisbon. The Swedish striker has emerged as one of Europe’s most coveted forwards in the Portuguese capital, where he has scored 70 goals in 76 appearances.

Gyokeres has a release clause of €100m in his contract at the Estádio José Alvalade, though Sporting are understood to be prepared to accept a slight reduction on that fee. However, prising him from the Primeira Liga champions in the winter window will be difficult.

According to the report, Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is also under consideration, amid concerns over Andre Onana’s performances. Chelsea have also been linked with the Swiss shot-stopper.

United are also tracking Southampton winger Tyler Dibling. The 18-year-old is having a breakout season and has made 16 Premier League appearances for the Saints in 2024/25.
