Manchester City ‘closing in’ on first January signing

Manchester City are closing in on the signing of Abdukodir Khusanov from Lens.

Pep Guardiola is understood to have given the ‘green light’ to a deal for the defender, who is regarded as one of Ligue 1’s brightest prospects. Lens have offered the 20-year-old to numerous top clubs this month as the French side look to bring in funds.

Manchester City are now advancing in talks to sign the Uzbekistan international for a fee believed to be in the region of €40m (£33.5m).

Fabrizo Romano has revealed that personal terms with the player have been agreed and negotiations between the two sides are at the final stages. Khusanov is pushing for the move to Manchester.

The defender has broken into the Lens team on a regular basis this season, with Englishman Will Still’s side boasting the second-best defensive record in Ligue 1.

His mature reading of the game has attracted interest from Europe’s elite. Khusanov averages more interceptions per game (2.36) than any other centre-back in Europe’s top five leagues across the last 12 months.

The centre-back’s arrival will be the first transfer of what could be an active January transfer window for the Citizens. City have made an approach to sign Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, while there is also interest in Palmeiras teenager Vitor Reis.
